Black Bead Blog Tour

“The premise of Black Bead is wonderful, and it was a fun, short read I happily breezed through. It was refreshing to read new sci-fi with an original plot, on a new planet.” Carly Courtney, Sci-Fi Addicts.com
BLURB:
On a savage, outlying planet an enclave of psionically-trained humans have built a utopian, matriarchal society that lives in harmony with all life. Leaving behind the polluted and corrupt world in which they lived, they colonized a new home far from the eyes of the galactic empire. Shielded from the rest of the galaxy by the dangerous beasts that inhabit their lush, forested world, the village lives a simple life under their Home Dome. But their goal was more than just to live in peace – they wanted to create the perfect human who could bring peace to the galaxy. Rather than merely cloning themselves, they began to manipulate genes in order to create a race of mutants with enhanced telepathic powers.
Under the direction of the ruling witch coven, each child of the Windfall Dome is tested at a young age to asses their abilities – a test which can plot the course for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, Cheobawn – the daughter of the ruling First Mother to the dome – is marked with the Black Bead on her Choosing Day, a symbol of bad luck and shame. It seems the child the mothers had placed so much hope in would not be the future ruler they had hoped for. Yet there is something powerful about her that the elders don’t understand.
Finally of age, Cheobawn is chosen to join a pack to act as the psychic Ear on a foraging mission outside the dome. She knows this is her chance to prove herself. But something sinister stalks them and each member of the pack must draw on their unique strengths and a lifetime of training if they want to survive to see another day.
In her visionary new series The Black Bead Chronicles, author J.D. Lakey invites you to journey along with Cheobawn, Megan, Tam, Connor, and Alain as they use their wits and their Luck to unravel the mysteries of the deceptively bucolic life beneath the dome in this coming of age metaphysical science fiction adventure.

Oak & Mistletoe

Exclusive Excerpt

A Druid Curse, A Prophesied Love, A Consuming Vengeance…

Catherine Green, along with her twin sister and older brother, travels to Ireland on a college graduation trip. Her vacation takes a permanent turn when she lands her dream job at an art and history museum on her beloved Emerald Isle. She meets a handsome stranger named Bowen, an expert of sorts on local ancient studies. Though their first meetings are turbulent at best, Catherine finds herself drawn to him.

Unaware that she is the key to breaking a hidden curse, Catherine unleashes the evil madman Conall and his druid followers, imprisoned since ancient times. Tragedy and loss ensue, sprouting within Catherine the deep seeds of rage that thrust her onto the damaging path of vengeance. Confused by the enigma that is Bowen, his mixed signals, and her own feelings, she is swept away with him on an unexpected journey surrounded by myth and long-forgotten knowledge. In order to stop the evil plans of Conall and his reunified army, Catherine must entwine her fate with peril. Her survival is trivial to her as long as Conall dies. She’ll do whatever it takes.
Exclusive Excerpt from Oak & Mistletoe
“My brother will be here shortly. And you are already on Garda records, Mr. Unknown, should something happen to me. They have your description. I won't just leave my life here because some nut tells me to, without a reason of any kind. So it's up to you how this plays out...you tell me, or shall we duke it out right here and now?” She dropped her bags on the ground emphatically.

“I'm not going to fight you, Catherine.”

“Oh? You certainly came off pushy before,” she said.

“You won't believe the truth,” he replied solemnly.

“Try me,” she said putting her hands on her hips, waiting.

“You haven't believed anything I say so far...” he mumbled.

Catherine heard footsteps and turned to see Danny come around the corner. He was holding the stamps in his hand with the receipt. She turned back to Bowen, but he was gone. She turned around frantically trying to glimpse him in the distance. But he had disappeared.

Danny smiled his lopsided grin. “What's wrong?” he asked, seeing the groceries on the ground.

“Ugghhh!” was all Catherine could get out.

Although we’ve been conditioned to think “middle aged” is practically a four-letter word, the realities of women in midlife today are far different than what our mothers experienced. Women in their 40s, 50s, and even 60s are living younger, vibrant lives. But influenced by our youth-obsessed culture, we fear that when we hit midlife, we stop being relevant and no longer have options—that it’s simply too late for us.
Contradicting long-ingrained beliefs, Robi Ludwig draws on myth-busting data from scientific research and on her experience as a therapist to show midlife is not the beginning of our decline—it is actually a time to pursue our dreams. In Your Best Age Is Now, she offers specific advice on how to change our perception of this next life phase and make the best of it by:
·      Letting go of stress to create a more balanced life;
·      Identifying false thinking that is holding us back;
·      Taking charge of our love life and relationships;
·      Staying relevant in the workplace or starting new, exciting careers;
·      Becoming more spiritual and leading a life of gratitude; and more.
Your Best Age Is Now provides the guidance you need to reject the status quo, become more “you” than ever before, and find the kind of happiness you never thought possible.

An Interview with Alexander Grant

Tell us why should anyone read your book:
First, because fantasy is an entertaining read. Each author offers something different to stimulate the reader's imagination. My book, The Forbidden City, is written in a cinematographic manner. By that I mean that several readers commented that they felt like seeing a movie unfolding through its pages. I also introduce an element which is rarely found in fantasy, shamanism. The various kinds of magic that can be found in the book are weaved together in a harmonious way and are also explained logically. Nevertheless, the notion of the need for the presence of a shaman in order to 'anchor' someone between different time frames is, I think, unique.
A reader wrote to me that she will discuss the messages of the book with her kids. She was referring to the life lessons I introduced in the story, like the importance of strategic thinking and acting, the comments about the various political systems and the message against all forms of racism.
Another element, which for me is very important, is the fully developed characters. I intend to keep writing books with these characters so I did not want them to be two-dimensional. From the various comments I saw that readers appreciate the depth and variety of the characters. In my second book, The Lion Prophecy, I develop even more the characters of Leandros and Helena.
Finally the story: The book starts as a usual sword and sorcery story but it gradually turns into a mystery tale which reserves surprises till the very end. For the lovers of epic battles I should mention that only the siege part covers 34 pages of the paperback. The really original element in the battle scenes is of course strategy. I picture the King's Lion as a master strategist. I can also assure the romance lovers that they will not be disappointed.
Why did you decide to write Epic Fantasy?
I love playing basketball. I often picture offence in basketball as a kind of siege, where the attackers must drive the defenders off-balance and strike where and when they least expect it. For this reason, I have always wanted to write a siege scene, but was too lazy to do it, until my wife suggested to me to write something in order not to look so bored during Christmas. So one winter day, there I was, writing down the scene that had existed ever since at the back of my mind.
Once I had the first draft ready, I found myself facing the unavoidable question. Who are these people and why are they being besieged?
Before I knew it, I found myself in front of my pc screen again, writing what seemed to be a simple story. And then Leandros arrived.
Since a young age, I have felt passionate about strategy. I read the works of Sun Tzu, Julius Caesar, Von Clausewitz, even Miyamoto Musashi. I studied the strategies of Von Moltke, Patton and Rommel, trying to imagine how they approached warfare. I even researched battles like Little Bighorn or Alexander’s battle of the Hydaspes.

Needless to say, I was playing PC strategy games. So, I guess the King’s Lion is, to a certain extent, a product of this interest.
On what concerns magic, I had, since young, an interest in oriental approaches like Zen and Taoism and, for me unavoidably, about the very ancient practices of shamanism. I managed to combine, in The Forbidden City, various forms of magic, together with shamanism and astrology. There will be much more on that in other books.

Who is your favorite author of Epic Fantasy?
If I have to choose only one, it would be David Gemmell. I love very much his Drenai Tales. I enjoy a lot his writing style. He uses only as many words as necessary to tell THE story, without writing un-necessary things just to fill more pages.

What can we expect from you?
The way my second book, The Lion Prophecy builds upon The Forbidden City, my third book, which I am currently writing, will built upon the two previous ones. Furthermore, in this book I will plant the seeds for the fourth book which I hope will be majestically Epic.

The Forbidden City (The King's Lion Book 1)

Filled with magic, mystery, romance and spectacular battles,
this is the first epic adventure of the King's Lion

Hunted by his own legions, the undefeated General Leandros, the King's Lion, seeks refuge in the mysterious land of Indra. But sanctuary comes at a high price.

An ancient evil plunges the world into warfare and bloodshed and Leandros must use his military genius if he is to prevail.

With assassins lurking behind every corner, he must protect the woman he loves and defeat the ruthless usurper who murdered his own brother, the King.

In a world full of intrigue and enchantment, where Gods and humans play dangerous power games, the King's Lion fights one breathtaking battle after another across an entire continent. The future of the Empire depends on him.

THE LION PROPHECY (The King's Lion Series Book 2)

THE KING'S LION IS BACK IN A SWASHBUCKLING ADVENTURE!

After years of fighting, peace reigns over the Eagle Empire. General Leandros is enjoying a romantic vacation with his wife at sea when a mysterious sea captain, the Mask, abducts them, asking for their help to free his fellow islanders from slavery.

Leandros and Helena start training the islanders, conducting daring raids on land and sea to free the slaves. Their only allies are a powerful sea-witch and a savage crew of ex-pirates.

Breathtaking duels and fierce battles turn the tide in favour of the islanders until the enemy monarch sends his Grand Fleet to subdue them. With only two ships and a handful of men, the King's Lion faces a terrifying challenge. The future of an entire nation lies in his hands.

Biography

After a long career working in the media and with international organisations, which took him across four continents, Alexander has combined two of his great passions, writing and strategy, to produce the King's Lion Tales. The books, in order of publication, are:

THE FORBIDDEN CITY
THE LION PROPHECY

Alexander is currently writing the third book in the series.

My Review
Wow. Just wow. This book was amazing. I had no expectations about this book, but it definitely gripped me from beginning to end. Full of twists and surprises, The Midnight Society is perfect for young adults and adults alike. There is something for everyone. You don't see too many time-travel stories in YA, because it can be a tricky subject. But, the author does a great job of explaining things and setting up the characters and the world. Wizards, magic, danger. What else could you want? Highly recommended.

I received this book in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Check out this exclusive excerpt:

“I brought a dead cheerleader back to life,” she blurted.
Naitanui’s luminous yellow eyes widened.
“I probably would have gone with ‘hello’ to break the ice. But that was definitely another option,” Austin said.
“Where am I?” Cate demanded.
“You’re outside the Break,” Austin said.
“You could have killed her.” Naitanui gave Austin a look Cate was all too familiar with. Her mother used it often. It came with an ‘I’ll deal with you later’ clause.
“But I didn’t. We found her. I couldn’t risk her vanishing.”
“Inside.” Naitanui stepped backwards through the cascading water.
“Huh?” Cate pulled back, digging her heels into the ground and crossing her arms. The water didn’t splash on Naitanui’s head. He had passed through the waterfall, leaving it undisturbed. Until Austin did some explaining, she wasn’t going to take a step further.
“Have it your way.” Austin bent and grabbed her behind the knees, then slung her over his shoulder.
“Put me down.” She pounded on his back with her fists. Unperturbed, he strode toward where Naitanui had disappeared. A shudder ran through her, and before she knew it, the waterfall was behind them. They’d walked straight through and arrived dry on the other side. She stretched to touch the water, and her fingers glided through nothing. Another shudder ran up her arm, yet it remained dry.
“It’s a glamour.” Austin set her down. “More magic.” He strolled farther into the cave, heading for an opening in the rock wall. The slightest hint of light filtered through the gap.
She looked from Austin to the waterfall, deliberating whether to run away or follow.
“You can’t go back to two thousand and fourteen without me. Come and learn about time travel.” Austin ducked through the archway. “You demanded I bring you here for answers, so man up and come get them.”

Little puffs of red dirt rose as she marched after him. Time travel. What the hell?

Author Bio
Rhonda was born and raised in a small country town in Western Australia surrounded by the most beautiful beaches in the world, although sadly the weather provided more rainy days than sunny.
After high school she headed to the city and after four years studying at University, which was completely free back then, she studied a little more and set off with her Chartered Accountant Certificate under her arm to travel the world doing all things financial, which she found fun and interesting. Please don’t hold that against her. To this day she remains pretty much all travelled out, which many people find incomprehensible.
One evening, shortly after the arrival of her second child she announced to her very understanding and supportive husband, her decision to swap spreadsheets and numbers for chapters and prose. This was followed by the bold and impossibly naive statement she was going to write a book. And just like that she was hooked.
At an age well over 21 she found something she was passionate about and truly loved. That first novel still sits on her computer – cringe worthy to the trained eye, but a reminder of not only how far she has come, but also to never be afraid to try something new.
Working from home can be very distracting, with the television, free WiFi, two very entertaining ragdoll cats and a multitude of things to clean and organize. That is Rhonda’s excuse for writing in coffee shops. When she isn’t writing, her time is spent playing taxi to her children, making school lunches and planning what to cook for dinner. An unfortunate accident in her first Tae Kwon Do class which resulted in six weeks immobile in plaster, followed by six months of rehabilitation now has her committed to watching her children in their Tae Kwon Do classes to research new fight moves for her characters.
On the good days, she adores writing, on the challenging days, it’s still awesome.
Her debut novel The Midnight Society was a finalist in the Young Adult category and overall runner up in The Strongest Start 2012 Contest hosted by TheNextBigWriter.com.

Rhonda now lives in Perth, Western Australia with her husband and two children. Her two ragdoll cats can often be found helpfully walking over her keyboard, chasing her mouse or generally complaining loudly about the lack of priority their needs are given
