Top 10 Music Tracks by, Christopher D. Morgan

Top 10 Music Tracks

Usually, I like to sit in peaceful quiet when I’m writing but when the dreaded writer’s block strikes, a brief distraction with some of my favourite music can often help. So, and without further ado, here are my top 10 tracks I like to listen to, which I’m guessing will be somewhat different to what you might imagine.

1.  Big Parade by The Lumineers
I first heard this track as the backing to a Target advert on TV and something about it captivated me. I went through a phase of listening to it over and over, much to the annoyance of everyone else around me.

2. Riptide by Vance joy
I don’t know what it is but there’s something captivating about a music track that stops abruptly and then continues. Riptide is one of those songs. It’s something of a personal challenge for me to sing this and get that pause correct down to the millisecond.

3. Let it Grow by Ester Dean (soundtrack to Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax)
This is a particularly inspirational track, which is very uplifting. The entire soundtrack and movie have a great moral sub-text…don’t chop down trees! This one is poignant for me for another reason, though. The movie The Lorax was the very first movie that the local community group I volunteer with screened in public on our huge, outdoor, inflatable cinema screen. Half the neighbourhood turned out at the time and I had a great sense of achievement at doing something positive for the community.

4. Lava – soundtrack from the Pixar short movie
Here in Australia, I took the kids to see Inside Out, that movie where Riley has all those voices in her head portrayed by characters? Before the movie started, this Pixar short film was screened. It was such a touching tale of volcanoes falling in love and the soundtrack just captivated me for some reason. I’ve listed to this one endlessly ever since.

5. Amazing Grace
There are some truly stunning versions of this floating around. There’s one particular version on Youtube entitled “Amazing Grace - Best Version By Far! ” I don’t know who the artist is but the vocals are just beyond belief and I get goose bumps every time I listen to it.

6. Bread of Heaven
It’s not so much the song itself but the sound of it being sung by a Welsh choir that makes this one of my favourite tracks. Growing up in the UK, we used to sing hymns every morning in assembly. I never really paid it much attention at the time but listening to this track takes me back to that time in my life that I really enjoyed.

7. Duelling Banjos by Rusty York & Lonnie Mack
I actually never saw the movie that this is the soundtrack to. I just love the sound of a banjo and this is one of the very best examples of a banjo being played to its best abilities. Listening to this track, I’m always in awe at the technical expertise of the artist and how incredible he is to get this instrument to make this sound.

8. No Regrets by The Walker Brothers
This is a soundtrack from the distant past and you’d be forgiven for not having heard of it. It’s one of those golden oldies from the 70s – my primary school years. I don’t think I particularly liked this at the time but I was walking down the street in London some years ago and caught the sound of this track playing out from somewhere. It was just a second or two but it instantly transported me back and I was suddenly hooked. When my wife and I backpacked around the world, I would listen to this every night whilst writing up my daily travel journal. It has been played over 600 times according to my iTunes library.

9. I Can See Clearly Now by Jimmy Cliff
Another completely different style of music, I don’t by and large, listen to a lot of Reggae but the smoothness of this one evokes a physical response in me. My shoulders instantly sink and I relax, like slipping into a hot tub and allowing the stresses of the day to melt away. Just magical.

10. Circle of Life by Carmen Twillie (soundtrack to The Lion King)
Like some of my other favourite tracks, this one instantly transports me to somewhere I loved being. It was about 15 years ago when we embarked upon a truly epic journey by spending almost two years on the road, backpacking. The first country we went to was South Africa. Whilst there, we spent about a week in the Kruger National Park doing safari drives in our rental car. One of the places we stayed was the Olifants Rest Camp, which had spectacular panoramic views out onto the plains below. I remember my hair standing up on the back of my neck as we stood there and surveyed this magnificent scene before us. This track takes me back to that moment in time.

11. Imagine by John Lennon
OK, I know, I know, I was only supposed to list my top ten but how can anyone create a top ten list without this one? It’s routinely voted into the top ten best tracks of all time and for good reason. Just listen to all your problems dissolve away and lose yourself in this amazing piece of music.

Well, there it is. Quite an eclectic mix of styles, genres and tastes, don’t you think? Generally, I like tracks that are a little melancholy and tuneful – something with a bit of rhythm and pleasing to the ear. How does that measure up to what kind of music you like to listen to?

Review

"Forestium is a beautifully written tale that introduces us to a strange new world, its many races, feats of magic and the power of love and truth. Christopher D. Morgan has done a fabulous job of creating scenes that come to life where the sense of action and the emotional entanglements feel real. With great dialogue, a smorgasbord of characters and evil always lurking in the shadows, this fantasy is easy to fall into and hard to leave. A great start to a new YA fantasy series!"
- Tome Tender Book Blog

"Powerful emotion, tense conflict, desperate action and quirky secondary characters make this story a delight to read. Recommended especially for younger teenagers and for Fantasy readers in general."
- Airborn Press

"Honestly I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. Normally Fantasy books don't interest me in the slightest but this one really drew my attention in an held it. The variety of characters and the illustrations starting each chapter made it easier to navigate through the story. The author has a strong voice throughout the story making it easy to forget you are reading a story. He knows the world he created well."
- K's Book Review

"Forestium is a great, simple introduction to the fantasy genre for very early teens, and its under-arching coming-of-age storyline will be sure to make the story relatable to every young reader. Featuring magic, true friendships, first loves and first heartbreaks, this easy read novel eases into Joshua's world and into the adventure at a steady pace."

The Keeper of Dragons Blog Tour

The Keeper of Dragons Blog Tour

Meet JA Culican!

People always ask me about myself...after I answer they are like...you write when exactly?!?!?

A little about myself....my name is JA Culican. I have been married for 11 years this July....to my high school sweetheart....awww! We have four children who keep us on our toes....ages 3, 5, 6 & 9! By day I am an 8th grade special ed. teacher and the President of Puzzle Peace United, a nonprofit that helps families with children with Autism....by night, I write!

Why do I write....or better why and when? Easy, my kids! My kids love fantasy and magic. When given the choice of going to Disney or Universal...my kiddos pick Universal...why? Harry Potter of course! My kids love dragons, mermaids, wizards and any other magical creature you can think of! The when is also easy...after bedtime. Once my kids are in bed, lunches are made for the next day...and the house is kinda picked up...I write.

Writing was always just a hobby for me. A way to relax and wind down. I started making up stories for my kids about dragons that I would tell them before bedtime. My oldest who hated to read, begged me for the book of these stories. I told her there wasn't one, that I just made them up....and she begged me to write it for her...the kid who hated to read!! So, of course I had to write it!! And in turn, The Keeper of Dragons was born!- JA Culican

More About JA Culican

J.A. Culican is a teacher by day and a writer by night. She lives in New Jersey with her husband of eleven years and their four young children. She spend her evenings at home, with her family watching Harry Potter and Star Wars. When not home you can find her at the soccer or field hockey fields, rooting her children on.

J.A. Culican’s inspiration to start writing came from her children and their love for all things magical. Bedtime stories turned to reality after her oldest daughter begged her for the book from which her stories of dragons came from. In turn, the series The Keeper of Dragons was born.

How would you react if you found out you were a dragon?

Not just any dragon-the one who was fated to save all that was deemed true.

On his 18th birthday, Cole’s once humdrum life spirals into an uncontrollable battle for life or death. First, he learns that his family isn't really his own and his birth parents are actually dragons. With that legacy comes a special calling; devoting an eternity to protecting all true beings from creatures bent on controlling the Earth and bringing an end to dragons.

As the newly-minted Prince of Ochana, Cole is also the Keeper of Dragons and his first task is to keep the nefarious farro-fallen fairies-at bay. With no formal training, no control of his mahier-dragon magic, and fear like he’s never experienced before, will Cole be able to reach outside of his human side and embrace his destiny in time to defeat the farros?

An Unhuman Journey

An Unhuman Journey

There's a war brewing between good and evil, and the chess pieces are being set...
Aaron has gone missing, and Mordecai has taken over Kirsten's training. She's learning by leaps and bounds under the god-of-old's not-so-gentle tutelage, but with Nathan in charge of Drake Security during The Dragon King's unplanned absence, everything is upside down.

The evil Celrau vampires were banned from creating new offspring, but they've bargained for permission to do so in the Underworld, where the Concilio has no authority. As part of their army-building, the Celrau vampires kidnap Kirsten and take her to the Underworld with the intention of making her one of them. Alone in another realm, Kirsten must form unexpected alliances to survive a most Unhuman Journey.

Join bestselling author Candace Blevins on a thrilling adventure into the critically acclaimed sequel to Only Human.

EDGy Reviews:
The unique worldview presented also fascinated me. Who the old Gods actually were, how the different worlds came into being (earth, the underworld, faerie etc.) and the rules that the supernaturals from all the different planes had to adhere to kept me turning the pages all night long.  ...  When I finished the last page, I once again had a huge smile on my face. Everything about this book worked for me, keeping me enthralled from start to finish. Like most urban fantasy books, although the main "journey" of this book is over, the story is not. I cannot freaking wait for the next one in the series.

La Crimson Femme:
Through all of this smexy goodness, Ms. Blevins adds in a touch of angst as well as a dose of humour. Her timing for both are perfect and makes this story pull out all sorts of emotions. This engages a reader and draws them deeper into the story. I must confess, I read this all in one sitting because I had to know what would happen next. I'm transported into a fabulous kinky world where the fight between good and evil is not as clearly delineated as one would like. This erotic urban fantasy is highly recommended to kinky readers who like heroines who kicks butts and takes down names.

The Book Cellar
I am beyond obsessed with this series! I had read a few of Candace Blevins' other books and liked them, but diving into this series was like nothing of hers I've read before. They are nothing short of completely awesome, and I already am pining for the next book...

“I have a proposition for you.”
I once again held my tongue and didn’t remind him there’d be no sex. “I’m listening.”
“I’d like to have full access to you from an as-yet-to-be-specified Thursday evening until Monday morning, for which I will pay you ten thousand dollars.”

I opened my mouth to turn him down, but he held a hand up. “No safeword. No limits. I’ll do whatever I want, however I want, with the understanding you’ll be rested, healed, and back to normal by seven o’clock Monday morning.”

Sports Romance! A Guest Post by, Sydney Aaliyah Michelle

Sports Romance!

A Guest Post

by, Sydney Aaliyah Michelle

I love reading. I love sports. I love romance.

I love reading sports romances.

I am not an expert, but I have a few requirements for my sports romance reads.

1.  They have to be accurate. You have to get your facts straight when it comes to the sport. While most readers don't care, there will be those readers, like me who know EVERYTHING about the game of football. If you don't get a fact straight, I throw a yellow flag and step away from the book.
2.  You can't shy away from the sports. If you are writing about a professional or collegiate athlete, the sport is part of these people’s lives, especially during the season. Don't make it an after thought.
3.  Write about the romance in the contexts of the athlete's life. If the male main character plays football, he can't go on a trip to Vegas in the fall. If he's a baseball player, he won't be attending a wedding in the summer. If the female main character is going to run away, I'm sorry, but he's not going to be able to chase after you until after the game. And I can not stress this enough, if you are in a football stadium, there is no circumstance short of you dying in the stand will the game stop down so he can give you a passionate wet kiss.
I know what your thinking, but it's so romantic. No it's not, it's weird and literally impossible.
But, I will give you one ... that whole thing about no sex before a game or competition, total myth. So characters can go at it all night, but he's most likely not going to blow off the game to stay in bed, so don't expect him to. He's not being an asshole, it's his job.

There are authors out there doing awesome sport romances.
My top five sport romance writers:

Elle Kennedy - the author of The Deal. An amazing hockey romance with sexy characters. Kennedy gets her facts straight.

J. Sterling - the author of The Perfect Game, a college baseball sports romance, full of emotion and with a strong female main character.

C.M. Doporto - the author of Opposing Sides, C.M writes both college football and baseball in her story to create a well-done sport romance triangle.

Mariana Zapata - the author of The Wall of Winnepeg and Me. This is a big book, but a great story. As a former assistant to a professional athlete, I could relate. The hate to love story is so well done.

Twyla Turner - the author of Chasing Day. We have music and sports, life long best friends turned lovers; it took a lot of synchronizing to get this couple together and Twyla coordinates it well.

If you want to win an ecopy of each of these books, please visit my Facebook Page (http://on.fb.me/1C235oR), like my page and tell me you love sports romance. I'll pick an entry at random to receive ecopies of all five books.

Read my new sexy sports romance, Anxious Love available now.
